Copper Clay Beginner's Class
Thursday, 12th September 2019
Have a play with copper clay! Copper is a gorgeous warm metal. It looks great on its own, as well as combined with other materials. It’s a very strong and economical metal clay, so will give you the freedom to explore making larger pieces than you might want to do in silver.
This is an ideal class if you've used silver clay, and want to take your metal clay skills to the next level, by moving on to working with base metals.
Base metal clays like copper, brass, bronze and iron, are very different to silver, and require different firing techniques. Most of these are pretty difficult to fire successfully, and require a lot of testing and time to get it right. We’ll talk a little about this in the class.
On the day we’ll be using Art Clay Copper as it is one of the best base metal clays to start with; it’s lovely to work with, and easy to get the firing right! It is also one of the very few base metal clays you can fire with a torch. We will give you a couple of options for firing Art Clay Copper successfully at home, whether you have a kiln or not.
Here are some of the things you’ll learn about on the day:
- handling the clay
- rolling out the clay evenly
- texturing and cutting the clay
- finishing, firing, and polishing
- basics about kiln firing base metals
- we will demonstrate torch firing
The course fee includes:
- 12.5g Art Clay Copper
- Copper finding to embed
- Use of all tools needed, including textures and cutters
And of course - no class of our’s would ever be complete without free non-stop coffee, tea and biscuits… :)
Who is it suitable for?
You’ll get the most out of this class if you’ve worked with silver clay already, as we will only run through the basics about handling metal clay. The class will be focused on how base metal differs from silver clay, and its characteristics. However, a complete beginner can still attend and will leave with a finished piece. Ages 16+
