Product Description
Soldering Powder - 100 mesh, perfect solder for filigree jewellery making!
This very fine silver solder powder is ideal for soldering very fine detailed work, like filigree.
As used by Etsuko Mukoyama at You Can Make It 2020 in her Oriental Butterfly Filigree Pendant class - here is the Silver Solder Powder.
SIZE (of powder): 100 mesh which is about 0.144mm - 0.149mm and weighs 10gms.
MATERIAL: 60% Fine silver, 40% Copper and Zinc
- Prepare the Pieces: Ensure metal parts are clean, grease-free, and fit together tightly.
- Create the Paste: Mix the powder with distilled water to create a thin paste. For traditional filigree soldering, this can be done in the lid of the powder container.
- Apply Flux and Solder: Apply flux to the joint, then carefully apply the powder solder paste to the contact points.
- Heat Gently: Use a torch to heat the entire piece slowly, allowing the water to evaporate, before focusing the heat on the joint.
- Flow the Solder: Heat until the solder melts and fills the joint (a flash of silver).
- Clean and Pickle: Allow the piece to cool, then place it in a pickle solution to remove oxidation and flux residues
- Ventilation: Always work in a well-ventilated area.
NOTES
- Don't Waste: Leftover solder paste can be allowed to dry in the lid and then returned to the container, to be rehydrated with distilled water later.
- Heat Control: If the solder doesn't flow immediately, add more flux, as the original flux may have been used up.
- Alternative Application: Alternatively, for some applications, you can put the powder directly into a shaker and sprinkle it over a fluxed joint.
